Reading is a Priority at Victoria School

Mrs. Read has set up a temporary libary in front of Room 14 while our library is receiving the makeover. Mrs. Read believes our children should have materials available to them to read and has developed a plan to make that happen. Books are on rolling carts and organized by Accelerated Reader (AR) levels. There is a mini lab of computers set up in room 14 so that students can continue to take AR quizzes and earn points.Thank you, Mrs. Read, for modeling the importance of reading to all of us! We appreciate all you do for Victoria School.

Another Library Makeover Update!

The library is coming together! The painting is finished and the carpet is installed. The contractor's work is done and now it is time to begin moving back in to the space.
Here's Tyler, the manager over the construction part of the makeover, telling Mrs. Read that his part is all done!
Doesn't our library look bright and colorful? It will be a happy place to visit!

The Work Begins!

Bright and early on Tuesday morning (9/15/09), workers from WL Butler Construction, Inc. and PH Construction arrived at Victoria ready to begin the demolition of our library.

Within minutes, they started tearing out the old carpet.

They removed the old cabinets, which will be repurposed in our new library.

Next, the electrician began working with wires for the computers.

Then, this big saw was used by the carpenters to cut trim pieces.

Two days later, the painting started!

BBQ at Victoria

RUSD Nutrition Services has weekly Friday barbecues at elementary schools - rotating to through all the schools. Today was Victoria's turn for the BBQ! Our menu for the BBQ lunch included hamburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, a frozen fruit pop, a small bag of chips, and milk.
All students, whether illegible for free meals or paid, could enjoy this special treat.

The students enjoyed the menu. It was a successful barbecue at Victoria School. Thank you RUSD Nutrition Services Department!

What's Cookin' in Room 8?

The students in Ms. Murtaugh's room participated in a cooking activity this week!

As a follow up activity, they wrote the following paragraph about it.
We maed egg in the holl. First we mack the holl in the bred. Next we buder the bred. Then we fri it with an egg. I wot to mack them agin.

(We made eggs in a hole. First we made a hole in the bread. Next we buttered the bread. Then we fried it with an egg. I want to make it again.)
Looks yummy! The only problem is... they didn't invite me to eat with them :(

Library Update 9-12-09

Our once warm, but very crowded, library is now cold and empty... anxiously awaiting its facelift! On Friday, September 11th, the remaining bookcases and furniture in the library were moved out.

Safetly fencing was brought in to section off the construction zone.

Although Mrs. Read is still VERY excited, she is VERY exhausted!

Thank you to all who helped her pack up and move out our library, including: Target Volunteers, Mr. Lora (our head custodian), and Mr. & Mrs. Schipske (super parent volunteers).

Right on TARGET!

Today, Wednesday, September 9, 2009, sixteen volunteers from four local Target Stores came to help Mrs. Read pack up the library. It was amazing how much work they completed in the four short hours they were here.

All bookcases were been emptied. Thousands of books were boxed and boxes were labeled so make restocking the shelves easier.

Volunteers moved labeled boxes out to the storage shed for safe keeping until they return on October 14 to begin unpacking!

Computers were disconnected and moved into to classrooms so students can still have access while the removation is taking place.

Students loved seeing the Target Volunteers in their RED shirts! Several classes wrote thank you notes to the volunteers. Students are very excited about the makeover - especially now that they see the work beginning!

Thank you Target Volunteers for your role in making our Library Makeover possible.

Getting Ready for Library Makeover

Work will soon begin on our Library Makeover!! Last week, the contractors and painters came out and to take final measurements. A storage shed and dumpster have been delivered.

Mrs. Read is busy checking out textbooks to students, overseeing Accelerated Reader tests and quizzes, checking our library books, setting up the "Mobile Library" for when the library will be under construction, and packing up the library! She is an amazing at multitasking.

The plans for the renovation have changed slightly. We will no longer be connecting Room 4 with the Library (red tape and not enough time to engineer plans and have them approved to meet California's earthquake requirements). Room 4 will remain a separate room and we will have the computer lab located there! It will also house our teacher resource library and textbooks. New paint, carpet, furniture, books is still happening in both areas!

Amidst boxes and piles, Mrs. Read is continuing to check out books to 1st-6th grade students this week. As each class visits the library, they each get to pack one box of books!

Next week (September 8-11) the remaining item of library and computer lab will be packed up and put in the storage bin. About 20-25 Target volunteers will be coming on Wednesday the 9th to help! Then on September 14th, the construction/makeover begins!!!

Because Mrs. Read knows that it is imporant for all students to have library books, even while the library is closed, she has created a BookMobile. The BookMobile (rolling carts of books) will visit classrooms the weeks the library will be under construction.

Stay posted for more Library Makeover updates!

Summer is over, it's Back to School

Welcome to the 2009-10 School Year! It's going to be another extraordinary year!

On Thursday, August 24th, we held our annual Back-to-School Night. I believe that is does take a village to raise a child. Therefore, I am continually looking for opportunities to bring the school, home and community together. Back-to-School Night is one such occassion!

Families were invited to join us for a family picnic of hotdogs, chips, and a water at 5:00 pm. This was a wonderful opportunity for families to meet other Victoria families. We also had several information/resource booths set up near the picnic area.

Our Victoria P.T.A. not only cooked hotdogs, they also had a "Spirtwear" booth and a membership booth. Parents and students were able to purchase school t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and bags. I saw one family leave wearing their newly purchased matching shirts and hats, including mom with a hat and bag! The P.T.A. also had a membership booth; all those who joined the P.T.A. got a discount coupon to Aquarium of the Pacific or Legoland.

The branch manager, Susie, of the Casa Blanca Library and Family Literacy Center also had a booth. Students who visited her table got a free book, pencil, and/or bookmark. She also had information about activities and services the Library provides for the local community.

Although Riverside Public Utilities was unable to attend to our event, they gave us information to pass out to families about living green. Victoria School is interested and motivated to recycle, reduce, and reuse!

The YMCA, located across the street at Hope Luthern Church, shared information with families interested in attending their afterschool program.
Mrs. Gonzales and Mr. Kaufhold provided information about "Parent Involvement" opportunities, including School Site Counsel (SSC), English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC), and Parent Academies. Several parents signed up to attend our first parent workshop scheduled for September 10. At this workshop, parents will discuss how they can support their child with homework. Each parent in attendance will also make a study center for their child to use at home when completing homework. At this booth, parents also expressed ideas for future topics of parent academy workshops.

As the Victoria tradition, Outdoor Ed held their annual Back-to-School Bake Sale. This is the kick off to their busy year of fundraising for sixth grade science camp in May.

In the classrooms, teachers presented information about grade level curriculum, classroom rules, homework, and other applicable information. We held two sessions of classroom presentations (at 5:45 and 6:30 pm) to accomodate families with more than one student or for those who were eating or visiting booths.

Although the extreme heat may have pevented many families from attending, Back-to-School Night was a success!
